What Happened to Julian Assange?

Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, was taken from the Ecuadorian Embassy in London on April 11th, 2019, and detained for alleged crimes against the United States. These crimes included exposing war crimes in Iraq and the routine use of torture on detainees at Guantanamo Bay by the US. Assange could face up to 175 years in America’s most severe prison, alongside those convicted of terrorism, espionage, and organized crime.

Strike one to educate one hundred

Assange’s actions in holding a powerful regime accountable could result in him being silenced forever. In 2010, Assange revealed how a US Apache helicopter murdered 11 civilians in Baghdad, revealing more than 250 thousand diplomatic cables uncovering US criminal behavior all over the world. Assange also revealed how torture was a common practice in Guantanamo Bay, and most people detained in that prison were never charged with any crime.

According to the United Nations, Julian Assange is being held arbitrarily and subjected to torture. The US government is trying to argue that Julian is not a journalist but a spy. If they succeed, it will threaten the safety of all journalists who perform their duties.
